Finding the right home is not an easy task. Often, deciding on a property can take a long time, as homebuyers find a hard time deciding on the right location, number of bedrooms, and lawn space, among other factors. It is understandable that this decision takes time because you wouldn’t want to be stuck in a home for years with a mortgage that you can’t justify, or put more work fixing a house than what you paid for it just to make it suit your needs.
At some point, however, you will have to make a decision. However, when do you know that you’ve found the one? If the decision seems too hard to make, here are four signs to determine that you’ve found your dream house:
It’s within your budget
The cost isn’t always the bottom line, but it’s one of the biggest factors that you will have to consider. A discerning homebuyer may have already used their budget to narrow down their choices. You’ll know the house is right for you if you’re confident that you have enough in the bank for a downpayment, and your monthly income is enough to cover the monthly mortgage.
The most important aspect is that you should never go for a house that will make you struggle to make ends meet every month. Your house should give you peace and comfort, not monthly stress-inducing bills.
It has everything you need
Because you’ve already set a budget, it follows that you should have already decided on the features that you need. You can forgo having an indoor pool if it means that you’ll have a closed-door garage for the winter.
If you’re looking for a house that can suit a growing family, you’ll have to take into account that as they grow, your children may prefer separate bedrooms and bathrooms as well. While you should be open to compromises, bear in mind that buying a house is a big financial decision, and you want your property to serve your needs for years.
Everybody’s list will be different, but most people will at least have the following in mind:
- A location is close to your place of work
- A location has good schools (if you have kids)
- Enough bedrooms for immediate family members
- Large kitchen for occasional guests
- More than one bathroom
- Adequate lawn or garden space
You can imagine living there
Whether through a stroke of luck or as a product of months of research and open houses, you’ll find a house that looks like it has everything you need. You can even imagine where your furniture will go. Best of all, a house will feel right if you can already see your dog enjoying the lawn, or your kids loving the cozy rooms. You’ll know it’s the right one if everything just fits perfectly.
If you’re using it to measure the other houses
It’s usually not recommended to land on the first listing that you see, but if it’s become the standard that you keep going back to as you visit other properties, then it could be the one. It’s always a good idea to shop around and explore other options. Yet, if you’ve already spent months without seeing another property that pops like the first one, then you should probably go back to your first love.
While you should always take your time in deciding on a financial decision as big as this, you should also bear in mind that other prospective homebuyers are eyeing to buy the same property. If you take too long, someone else could swoop in and put in an offer. Interest rates also change constantly, and you may miss out on good deals. If the house feels right, and you can pay for it, then don’t wait around and put in that offer immediately.
